Is Paharganj Safe for Tourists?
So many tourists, especially budget travellers, end up staying in Paharganj. It’s considered the backpacker area of Delhi and has loads of cheap accommodation. But is Paharganj safe for tourists?
The short answer is no. I would not want my friends or family staying in Paharganj. There are better budget options elsewhere in the city, and I’ll tell you what they are.
I lived in Delhi for years and still visit regularly. I’m very familiar with the city, including Paharganj.
Where is Paharganj?
Paharganj is in the north section of Central Delhi. It’s located next to the New Delhi Railway Station, one of the busiest train stations in India. I understand why it looks like a convenient location.
It’s very close to Old Delhi. In fact, it’s gritty, congested and noisy just like Old Delhi, but without the historic significance or charm.
How Safe is Paharganj for Tourists?
During the day Paharganj is fine. It’s a lively area with lots of cheap shopping and food. But at night it is not safe for tourists.
Delhi in general is not safe at night, and Paharganj is one of the worst areas. It’s known for drugs, prostitution, crimes against women and petty theft.
There was a time when it was almost a daily occurrence to find a tourist dead in a seedy hotel in Paharganj. The installation of CCTV cameras and a general cleanup of the neighbourhood improved things, but it’s still not great.
Don’t stay in Paharganj, avoid it after dark and don’t drink there, even though it’s known for cheap alcohol.

Where Should I Stay Instead of Paharganj?
There are several excellent budget options in South Delhi. This is the greenest and safest part of Delhi. I always recommend visitors stay here and I also stay in South Delhi when I return each year.
South Delhi is well connected by metro and a great base for exploring the city from. My top budget recommendations are:
- Tatvamansi Homestay: Small homestay just minutes from one of the best markets in Delhi with lots of shops and restaurants. Rooms are large and comfortable and it’s on a quiet street. Excellent location for exploring Delhi. It’s the most expensive option, but there’s a common kitchen so you can save money by preparing your own meals.
- YWCA International Guest House: This property is older and simple, but rooms are large and clean with private bathrooms and AC. The location is phenomenal, in one of the best areas of South Delhi near many 5 star hotels. Within walking distance of many sites. Amazing value for this location, and breakfast is included.
- Hosteller Delhi: Popular and friendly hostel in South East Delhi within walking distance of the metro. There’s a cafe, common kitchen and the hostel offers private and dorm style rooms. The location is not as central as the others, but it’s very budget friendly.

No, Paharganj is not a red light area, but there is prostitution. The red light area of Delhi is GB Road. GB Road is close to Paharganj, on the other side of the New Delhi Railway Station.
Why do foreigners stay in Paharganj?
Foreigners stay in Paharganj because they don’t know any better. They don’t realize this is not a good area of the city, and that there are good budget options in much nicer parts of Delhi.
It actually drives me crazy. It’s such a gritty, dirty area and visitors that come for a quick overnight or day end up thinking this is what all of Delhi is like.

Paharganj can be a fun and exciting place to visit during the day, but it’s not safe for tourists at night. When it comes to a place to sleep and return to in the evening, stay in South Delhi.
Even if you have to spend a few dollars more, it’s better to stay in a safer neighbourhood in Delhi.
