Where to Eat With Kids in Delhi

disclaimer

If you’re wondering where to eat with your kids in Delhi, there are a lot of options. Even the most fussy eaters will be able to find something they like, including non-Indian foods.

Delhi has got everything: Indian and international restaurants, pizzerias, American fast food chains, as well as some pretty cool places to eat that your child will remember for a long time after.

Where to Eat with Kids in Delhi

Indian cuisine is one of the most diverse in the world, but the masala might not suit young palates.

Luckily there are many options for less adventurous eaters. Besides Western chains like McDonald’s, Taco Bell, KFC, Domino’s and Subway there are lots of great restaurants for children.

I’ve eaten at every single one of these restaurants, even though I forgot to take photos at some of them. They are solid places in Delhi where you can eat with kids.

Where to Eat Indian Food in Delhi With Kids

If your child is willing to try Indian food, these are good restaurants in Delhi for kids:

1. Haldiram’s

Haldiram’s is a great way for kids to safely try traditional Indian snacks and street food

Haldiram’s is an Indian chain of very casual restaurants. It’s kind of cafeteria style: you order and pay for you food at the cash, then wait as they prepare it in front of you, then take it to your table.

It’s a great place to try light Indian meals, chaats and lassi. The food is not overly spicy and very hygienic. My friends and I eat at Haldiram’s all the time.

There are locations everywhere in Delhi. Many Haldiram’s also sell pre-packaged snacks, meals and sweets you can take home for later.

2. Naivedyam

This is a very well regarded south Indian restaurant with a few locations. The one in Hauz Khas Village is a bit more fancy, but the one in Connaught Place is very casual and good for families.

A thali tray is great for kids because you get a variety of foods and they can try a lot of different things.

Naivedyam in Connaught Place has a chaat (snack/appetizer) buffet and dessert buffet that’s included, so kids can make their own Indian chaats and choose what they want.

3. Andhra Pradesh Bhavan

This canteen is a state bhavan – one of the best foodie secrets in Delhi. Each state in India has a government building in Delhi with a canteen. These canteens serve food from their state at budget prices.

Andhra Pradesh Bhavan is one of the most popular ones. It’s humble, but the food is excellent and very fresh. I recommend the veg thali tray, which is all you can eat.

Servers roam the aisles and slosh out food onto your tray, which kids love. You can get as many refills and fresh chapatis as you want. It’s located at 1 Ashoka Road in New Delhi.

4. Juggernaut

Juggernaut specializes in South Indian cuisine, and their dosas are amazing. Dosa is a huge savoury Indian crepe and there are many varieties.

The dough can be made with different types of flour, including ground lentils. They can be stuffed with a number of fillings and always come with various condiments for dipping.

This is a fun meal for kids to eat with their hands, and Juggernaut is one of the best restaurants to try dosa at.

There are two locations: Connaught Place and Greater Kailash Colony. The CP location is more cafeteria style. I prefer the more relaxed atmosphere at Greater Kailash.

5. India Food Bus

I found this double decker bus repurposed as a restaurant one day when I was shopping at Central Market Lajpat Nagar. I had already eaten, but I did go inside to check it out.

There were a few Indian families with children in there and everyone looked pretty happy. The menu is casual Desi food – kind of a mixed bag of wraps, burgers and pasta, but all Indianized.

6. Langar at Gurudwara Bangla Sahib

Langar at Gurudwara Bangla Sahib

If you want to give your kids a unique cultural food experience they won’t forget, having langar at Gurudwara Bangla Sahib is a great idea.

Gurudwara Bangla Sahib is the most prominent Sikh temple in Delhi. They have a huge dining room where they serve 10,000 free vegetarian meals a day – it’s called langar.

Everyone is welcome – all faiths and all nationalities. Everyone eats on the floor (if you have mobility issues they will provide a chair), usually with your hands, but you can get a spoon if you like.

Volunteers walk up and down the aisles filling trays with dal, vegetables, rice and chapatis. You can eat as much as you like, but the food is considered blessed so nothing should be left.

This is a completely free meal, cooked by volunteers with donations from the Sikh community. There is no stigma to eating langar – people of all social and economic sectors eat langar, including me.

Best Mixed Indian & Western Food Restaurants in Delhi for Kids

These are two excellent casual restaurants which serve a mix of Indian food and western food.

Their menus are pretty varied, and great for groups or families because everyone can usually find something they like.

7. The Big Chill

The Big Chill in Connaught Place

This is Delhi’s favourite home-grown restaurant chain, and there are multiple locations. It’s got a nostalgic retro vibe, perfect for families.

The menu includes pasta, pizza, burgers, salads, sandwiches and Indian food. I guarantee there will be something to please everyone. These are very popular cafes – I often have to wait for a table if I go on a weekend.

I like the Khan Market location because there’s a Big Chill Creamery for ice cream next door.

8. Social

This is another hugely popular local chain of restaurants with a menu that is half Indian and half American style food (burgers, pasta, salad, wraps, pizza etc.). There are locations all across Delhi.

Social is more a food and drinking spot than the Big Chill. During the day it’s very much a restaurant, but in the evening it becomes more of bar with food. I’ve been there with kids in the day and it’s absolutely fine.

The Social in Hauz Khas Village is one of the most famous restaurants in Delhi. It also has a great outdoor terrace with views of Hauz Khas Fort.

Where to Eat Western Food in Delhi with Kids

These are great restaurants with international and western food for kids in Delhi. I don’t have many photos, but I have eaten at every one of these.

9. Habitat Hub & Habiteria

Both of these eateries are located in the India Habitat Centre, one of Delhi’s premiere cultural centres. The location is very central in New Delhi, just across the street from Lodhi Garden.

Habitat Hub is an American retro style diner that serves international food, including breakfast. It’s a sit down restaurant. Food isn’t the most amazing ever, but it’s fine.

Habiteria is an upscale food court with lots of sandwich and pastry options. I prefer Habiteria because there’s a nice outdoor terrace with koi pond.

10. Diggin Cafe

Diggin is a popular Italian inspired cafe that has several locations in south Delhi. They’re famous for their beautiful outdoor terraces and are one of Delhi’s best cafes.

They have a child friendly menu offering pizza, pasta, soup, salads and milkshakes. I’ve eaten in every Diggin cafe in Delhi, and the food is consistently good. It’s a tried and true favourite of my friends and I.

11. Pete’s Deli

If you’re craving a New York style deli sandwich go straight to Pete’s Deli in Greater Kailash M Block Market. The sandwich shop has a cult following – it’s the most famous sandwich shop in Delhi.

Kids (or parents) can choose their bread, toppings, meat and sauces. All sandwiches are customizable.

12. Chili’s Grill & Bar

I admit Chili’s is not my first choice, but I have eaten at Chili’s in Delhi a couple of times always with American friends who seem to like it.

The menu does include some foods to appeal to the Indian palate, but is mostly burgers (buffalo), pizzas and the Tex-Mex food Chili’s is famous for.

13. Hard Rock Cafe

If your kids are craving burgers and American classics, this is the place to come. There’s a location in Connaught Place.

The restaurant is decorated with rock and roll memorabilia, has an outdoor terrace and its own coffee house, the Constant Grind.

14. PAUL

A great place for French style pastry, breakfast and European cafe food such as grilled salmon, croque monsieur and ravioli.

Quality is very good at PAUL. If you don’t want a sit down meal, some of the restaurants have bakery kiosks with amazing sandwiches you can grab and go.

Best Pizzerias in Delhi for Kids

Delhi has some excellent pizzerias serving authentic Italian style pizza. I’ve eaten pizza at each of these pizzerias and they are all fantastic:

  • Leo’s Artisan Pizza (Vasant Vihar and Lajpat Nagar locations)
  • EVOO Eatery & Pizzeria (Malviya Nagar)
  • Pizzeria da Susy (Gurugram)

Food and Water Safety for Kids in Delhi

Food is safe for kids to eat in Delhi, though much Indian cuisine uses spices and chilies which may be too much for children that aren’t used to it. Rice, chapatis (rotis) and yogurt are good to temper spicy food.

I would avoid street food with young children. While it usually is safe for tourists to eat street food, a GI infection or flare up in a small child can be serious.

Tap water is not safe to drink in Delhi. It is imperative that children drink bottled or filtered water. I would even make them brush their teeth with bottled water.

Last Words on Where to Eat With Kids in Delhi

There’s lots of great restaurant where you can eat with kids in Delhi. Even if they don’t like Indian food, there’s plenty of other options.
