Indian sweets, known as mithai, are a favourite treat of Indians. There are hundreds of sweet shops in Delhi, but I’ve curated a list of the best ones, many of which were recommended by locals.
Mithai holds a special place in Indian culture. They are not just desserts, but an integral part of traditions and celebrations. Made with rich ingredients like ghee, dried fruit and nuts, they symbolize joy, prosperity and the sweetness of life.
Best Sweet Shops in Delhi
Many of these shops sell hot food or bakery items, which may not be as good as the mithai. I’ve eaten at a few of these places and where the food is good, I’ve noted it. Here are the very best sweet shops in Delhi:
1. Bangla Sweet House
This is one of the oldest and most loved sweet shops in Delhi. When I was living in the Himalayas, the family I rented from would ask me to bring them mithai from this shop whenever I visited Delhi.
It’s just down the street from Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, so it gets very busy on weekends.
2. Chaina Ram Sindhi Confectioners
Don’t be put off by the busy location and slightly decrepit look of this Old Delhi shop. The food and sweets here are very good. I was here in the morning and the shop was already packed with locals.
It’s located at the very top of Delhi’s most famous street, Chandni Chowk and around the corner from the Old Delhi’s famous spice market, Khari Baoli. There’s almost always a small crowd getting food or mithai. The shop is a landmark, it’s been around since 1901.
3. Haldiram’s
Not only is Haldiram’s India’s number one fast food giant, they have excellent mithai too. Haldiram’s are known for their high standards, and a box of Indian sweets from any of the Delhi Haldiram’s shops will be very appreciated.
While you’re picking up mithai, don’t hesitate to eat here – the food is always good.
There are Haldiram’s everywhere in Delhi. There’s kiosks in the Indira Gandhi International Airport too, if case you want to pick up something last minute.
4. Kaleva
My landlady introduced me to Kaleva. It’s a favourite sweet shop of Delhiites, and very centrally located between Connaught Place and Gurudwara Bangla Sahib.
This is another shop where the food is very good, so have some lunch while you’re here. The chole kulcha (chick peas in gravy with fluffy bread) is one of the best in Delhi.
5. Shyam Sweets
Shyam Sweets is one of the best sweet shops in Old Delhi. If you’re there before noon, try an Indian breakfast of bedmi puri and aloo sabzi (puffy bread with potato curry). This is one place where the food is just as good as the sweets.
The gajar (carrot) halwa in winter and bhiya (bottle gourd) ki burfi in summer are especially good.
6. Evergreen Sweet House
This is one of my regular spots in South Delhi. I usually come here to have lunch (there’s a decent and budget friendly restaurant upstairs), and I always buy sweets to take home after.
This place is very popular with locals, and one of the best shops in South Delhi for sweets. The quality is consistently very good. It’s located close to the Green Park Tombs, so check them out while you’re there (free entry).
7. Moti Sweets
One of South Delhi’s best sweet shops, Moti Sweets has been selling mithai since 1962. This is a family run business, and they make mithai using traditional recipes.
It’s located in the main market of Malviya Nagar, and is the biggest and most popular sweet shop in the area. One side of the store is devoted to cakes, while the other is Indian sweets and desserts. They have a good selection of savoury snacks (namkeen) too.
8. Bansal Sweets
Bansal Sweets is a very popular North Delhi sweet shop, famous for using only desi ghee in their mithai. They make delicious traditional North Indian mithai like pinni, laddu, burfi and motichoor. This is one of the best options for a North Delhi sweet shop.
9. Bengali Sweet Centre
Bengali Sweet Centre is practically a South Delhi institution. It’s occupied a prominent corner in the South Ex main market for decades, and is very busy on evenings and weekends.
Mithai are great quality, and the food is also good there. When I visited the dining area was packed, and there were lots of people standing around and eating outside too – always a good sign!
South Ex is one of the better South Delhi neighbourhoods – well known for shopping. If you’re a fashionista in search of higher end Indian clothing, check out the shops while you’re there.
10. Shagun Sweets
Shagun Sweets is an absolute gem in East Delhi. They have some of the most beautiful mithai I have seen, as well as an impressive cake and pastry selection. If you really want to wow someone, come here and get an assorted mithai box.
There are several locations, mostly in East Delhi, but I go the shop in the market area of Jangpura which is central.
11. Om Sweets
Om Sweets is primarily in Gurugram (they have many shops there), but there’s one West Delhi location. When I first moved to Delhi, I lived in Janakapuri West and my neighbour brought me here. It’s definitely one of the best sweet shops in West Delhi.
The North Indian food is really good here too. If I’m in the area, I usually eat lunch here and get some sweets to take home.
12. Kamala Sweets
For Bengali sweets Kamala Sweets is the best shop to visit. It’s located in Chittaranjan Park, a predominantly Bengali neighbourhood in South Delhi. The mithai are very authentic, but if you come during the Durga Puja festival, expect it to be extremely busy.
This is one of my favourite sweet shops in Delhi. Bengali sweets typically use chhena (similar to cottage cheese) and are creamier and not as sweet as North Indian sweets. I like the mango and pineapple sondesh.
13. Gulab Sweets
If you you’re a fan of crispy nut loaded sweets, like chikki (Indian nut brittle), come here for the winter sweets gajak, chikki and rewri.
Gulab Sweets claim to be the originators of gajak and rewri, two sweets that I can only describe as a cross between a spiced nut cookie and nut brittle. And they are excellent here. They also travel well, so they’re an ideal gift to bring back home.
The shop is a little out of the way in North Delhi, but it might be worth the trip for the winter sweets.
